This project aims to strengthen the human resources of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM) through the mobilization of volunteers, thus facilitating a five year plan of action aiming to support a Volunteer Coordination Unit (VCU) to be established by the NCCM.

The main objective of the VCU is to promote community participation in local and national development efforts, encouraging active and caring communities that are sensitive to ongoing development needs identified by the NCCM. Such communities can be mobilized to act swiftly and effectively to reduce the suffering of children and mothers in Egypt.

The United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNVP) and the NCCM have been collaborating successfully through the pilot project “The FGM-Free Village Model”, an initiative aiming to eliminate the practice of Female Genital Mutilation in Egypt. National UNV field workers are involved as young leaders at a village level and have made significant contributions to the success of this project.
