Sailing the Nile for the MDGs
Eight feluccas will be sailing down the Nile, stopping in 8 towns from the 26th of October (United Nations Day celebrations in Aswan) to the 8th of December (UN Volunteer Day in Cairo). Each felucca will represent one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and have the corresponding “arabised” MDG symbol on the sail. The feluccas aim to raise awareness of successful development projects involving volunteers and inspire local communities of the Nile Basin to start their own projects to realize the MDGs. In addition, various cultural and sporting activities will take place in each chosen stop point and tangible benefits will be left at the service of the local population. Sailing the Nile represents a partnership that brings the United Nations, governments, civil society, business, media, sports groups, academia and other communities together to empower the people of Egypt to reach the MDGs through volunteer efforts |
