Dear Volunteer:

It is indeed the pleasure of the NGO Service Center to collaborate with the United Nations Volunteer Programme to develop this guide for you!

The NGO Service Center ( NGO SC ) in Egypt is a developmental activity aiming to increase the participation of citizens, through Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs), in development decision-making. The Center is sponsored by the Egyptian Ministry of Insurance and Social Affairs (MISA), and is funded for five years by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This year, the Center is transitioning into the Egyptian NGO Support Center that will continue to offer services and strengthen the capacity of the NGO sector throughout Egypt . In the interim, Save the Children/US manages the Center in partnership with America 's Development Foundation (ADF) and Infonex Corporation, under the guidance of an inter-governmental Steering Committee and an NGO Advisory Board.

Over its lifetime, the NGO SC strengthened the capacity and supported initiatives of local NGOs through the provision of grants, training, and technical assistance services to over 300 NGOs ranging from community-based development associations to national-level organizations and federations. Also, more than 5,000 development practitioners and NGO professionals participated in the various training and technical assistance programs offered by the Center on topics such as; internal governance, advocacy, NGO management, networking, gender, constituency building, volunteer management, and financial management, among others. For more about the Center and its work, please consult our website at www.ngocenter.org.eg .

One of the key issues the Center focuses on is building the capacity of NGOs in recruiting, managing, and retaining volunteers. When managed properly, volunteers constitute a great asset to any organization. They offer their time and skills to enhance operations at various levels to further the organization's mission and objectives. Therefore, it's quite important for NGOs to assess their organizational needs to best utilize volunteer resources. For the volunteers, they gain invaluable experience while at the same time they contribute to their country's development.

Our team of volunteer researchers and technical assistance specialists worked very hard to gather the information you will find in this guide and, to our best of knowledge, the information is accurate as of the publication date.. Organizations listed in this guide were selected for their high potential as volunteer involving organizations. You could choose the organization you want to volunteer for based upon either their geographic location within the Greater Cairo region; their main field of work; or their targeted beneficiary population.

We hope that you would find this Guide useful in identifying organizations to volunteer with.

All the best,
